The Benefits of Full-Service In Home Care

By Matthew G Young

My grandmother was diagnosed with breast cancer in the early 1990s and has been fighting against the disease on and off since then. Now, she is in her late 80s and lives with my mother. My mother is an elementary school teacher and is gone all day, which left my grandma by herself for most of the days. Recently, my mother has begun in home care for grandma a few days per week. As much as my grandmother fought against it at first, this care has proven to be a beneficial relationship for grandma. Her caretaker only stays for a couple hours in the morning, but it has taken a lot of pressure off of grandma. Previously, my grandmother stressed about getting her bed made, doing her laundry, washing dishes, and bathing. Now, in the few hours per week that her caretaker spends with her, these tasks are taken care of and my grandma is a much happier person.

The point that I want to make here is that in home care doesn’t need to be intense in order to be a beneficial thing. Rather than risking yet another fall trying to get her chores done, she can focus on the things she loves: word puzzles, soap operas, and her dog, Scout. Grandma still likes to try and pull her weight around the house by doing dishes once in a while, but with her caretaker’s assistance, the worry that she will fall and be stuck on the ground until my mother gets home has disappeared. If grandma feels well enough, she can do the chores she wishes under her caretaker’s supervision, which she often does. On her bad days, she can rest and watch television or read a mystery while her caretaker takes care of these things.

A full service in home care service can do all of these things and more. When a loved one needs help, you don’t have to break the bank to get them the help they need. Many people think that receiving in home care means that a caretaker will be in their house constantly, but this is far from the truth. A good in home care service will tailor-make the care that your loved one requires. If your family member, like my grandma, only needs a little bit of help just doing their chores, they can spend just a few hours per week helping out. If more intensive service is necessary, they can stay longer. Good in home care providers can even give live in care to your family member, providing them with a constant companion in order to help your loved one to the fullest degree. All of these services can be individualized to give your family member the help they need in the manner that they need it.

Beating Stress With In Home Care

By Matthew G Young

My mother lives with my grandmother in a fairly large home, giving them both a good deal of space to themselves. Still, this does not make my mother’s job any easier. Grandma has multiple medical problems and it has gotten to the point where she has recently begun in home care. My mother still teaches for a living and is gone for the entire day during the week and grandma was being left alone for long periods of time. This has given her a good deal of stress because, like any concerned daughter, she wants the best for her mother.

My grandma has been battling cancer off and on for over a decade. She is also hard of hearing and might require cataract removal surgery in the next few months. As she grows older, it seems like more and more problems creep up. This has been hard for my mother, but she has taken steps to help alleviate this stress. Her in home caretaker does not necessarily need to be there, but it has reduced my grandma’s fear of being left alone all day. While my grandma can still get around the house, it has become increasingly difficult for her and she worries a lot about falling down.

In home care has also helped my mother with her stress levels. Leaving her mother alone is not an ideal situation for her since my grandma is more and more frail every day. In home care lets her go to work without worrying about grandma falling down while she is trying to do dishes or something else.

Reducing stress has more than just an immediate appeal to it. With less stress in the air, my mother and grandmother’s relationship has gotten better. As irrational as it might be, my mother was starting to get angry, not at my grandmother, but about my grandmother. This needs to be explained in a bit more detail. My mother has been extremely worried about my grandmother and now that she has an ounce or two of that worry alleviated, she can stop worrying and continue their relationship in an unhampered manner. The stress was being carried over and was starting to be reflected in her attitude. In home care has actually improved my mom and grandma’s relationship by taking away the anger and resentment toward my grandmother. While she now can worry less, my grandmother’s legacy will be less wrought with the stress created by her deteriorating health.

In home care, as you can see, is a great way to get someone the help they need. But its effect on that person’s immediate family can be profound as well. If you have a loved one whose poor health or disability is starting to cause you a great deal of worry, in home care can be a great solution to many of the problems that are created.
